| Bio: | I'm a kernel hacker, for fun. I also collect old (actually, i accept new ones too!) unix-capable computer hardware and make them useful (as well as giving them a home, electricity, etc). Amongst the drawbacks are hefty power & telephone bills, and summertime cooling problems. My basement has a lot of machines in it. So many that some people have asked for tours. Scary, eh?
If you are interested in BSD operating systems, be sure to check my project OpenBSD -- a freely redistributable 4.4BSD based operating system that runs on about 10 platforms, with an emphasis on security and embedded cryptography! I am happy to say that our development team is now pretty much the same size as the development groups for any of the other free operating systems. For those who wonder why OpenBSD exists, the file coremail describes how the actions of the NetBSD core forced me to create the OpenBSD project. (BTW, I was one of the 4 people who started the NetBSD project).
I'm an obsessive mountain biker: I like mud and despise "wooded back-alleys" (what most people call logging roads). My previous bike was a Rocky Mountain `Experience' with Manitou Comp front shocks; SPD's completing the experience. The new bike is a Rocky Mountain `Instinct' -- Marizochi Z2 Bam shocks, Vanilla Float rear shock, and disk brakes for better operation in wet weather.
I'm a caver. I've been caving a little in the Yorkshire Pot system in the Crowsnest Pass area -- horrible muddy, cold, wet crawls. I went to Chaipas state in Mexico for 5 weeks in 1995, and also for about 2 months in 1996 where I managed the data we collected on my laptop computer. We used the caving software On Station, which was written by a friend of mine.
Perhaps I'll get some of my own pictures soon; in the meantime check Andy's description and pictures. I do not think I will go back to the area though because crime has increased so much.
I'm a mountain scrambler (ie. "peak bagger"). In recent times I have been attacking the upper Kananaskis area. Lightning normally seeks me out, but I got off lucky this last year. About every year I take the opportunity to go climb one large mountain somewhere outside Canada: been up Shasta (California), La Malinche and Orizaba (Mexico), Santa Maria and Pacaya (Guatemala)... gotta add some more to that list soon.
I'm an amatuer alcohol maker: rather hit 'n miss. Except for a few rare times, mostly I miss in the catagory of "flavor", but hit when it comes to "intensity". I should make some more; some batches are incredibly good.
I own cats. Their names are Galileo and Kepler -- they're still kittens. Kepler can nearly teleport through walls. Galileo is a rather cool monster. When they become fullgrown cats I will make stew & soup out of them. (Kepler is only good for soup). I work at home so they always have someone to play with. I accidentally showed them how fun it is to play with ethernet...
